Comparison of Four Techniques to Estimate Forage Intake by Rams Grazing on a Panicum coloratum L. Pasture Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Ferri,Carlos   M; Stritzler,Néstor  P; Brizuela,Miguel  A; Pagella,Horacio   J.
The estimation of daily feed intake is important in the determination of animal production The objective of this experiment was to compare measurements of animal forage intake obtained by the use of four techniques: pre- and post-grazing difference in standing forage mass, total daily feces collection in combination with in vitro diet digestibility, total daily feces collection in combination with diet digestibility estimated by the fecal nitrogen index and the n-alkane technique. The experiment was carried out on a stockpiled Panicum coloratum L. pasture during two growing seasons. The treatments for the first season comprised standing forage mass accumulated after mid-October, mid-January and mid-February mechanical harvest to 8-cm stubble. In the second...

Effect of calcium salts of fatty acids on the nutritive value of diets, feeding behavior, and serum blood parameters of lactating Saanen goats grazing on stargrass R. Bras. Zootec.
Gomes,Ludmila Couto; Alcalde,Claudete Regina; Cecato,Ulysses; Mari,Gracielle Caroline; Santos,Sérgio Mangano de Almeida; Mazziero,Jessyka Guedes.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine effects of the addition of calcium salts of fatty acids (CSFA) to the concentrate on the intake and digestibility of dry matter and nutrients and the grazing behavior of lactating Saanen goats. Five multiparous goats in their third lactation and four primiparous goats were used. The animals were distributed into two Latin square designs, which, for the multiparous goats was 5 × 5, with five treatments (0%, 1.5%, 3.0%, 4.5%, and 6.0% CSFA); and for the primiparous goats was 4 × 4, with four treatments (0%, 1.5%, 3.0%, and 4.5% CSFA). The addition of CSFA to the concentrate of lactating Saanen goats did not influence the time spent grazing, ruminating, or lying for multiparous goats. However, for...

Epicuticular waxes from caatinga and cerrado species and their efficiency against water loss Anais da ABC (AABC)
Oliveira,Antonio F. M.; Meirelles,Sérgio T.; Salatino,Antonio.
The effects of the contents and chemical composition of the foliar epicuticular waxes of species from the caatinga (Aspidosperma pyrifolium, Capparis yco, Maytenus rigida and Ziziphus joazeiro) and cerrado (Aristolochia esperanzae, Didymopanax vinosum, Strychnos pseudoquina and Tocoyena formosa) were evaluated as to the resistance to water loss by means of an experimental device constructed for this purpose. In general, the waxes of the caatinga species investigated were more efficient against water loss than cerrado species. Increase of the thickness of the waxy deposits from 40 to 90m g.cm-2 had no significant effect on the resistance to water loss. The chemistry of the wax constituents was shown to be an important factor to determine the degree of...

Ingestive behaviour, herbage intake and grazing efficiency of beef cattle steers on Tanzania guineagrass subjected to rotational stocking managements R. Bras. Zootec.
Difante,Gelson dos Santos; Euclides,Valéria Pacheco Batista; Nascimento Júnior,Domicio do; Silva,Sila Carneiro da; Torres Júnior,Roberto Augusto de Almeida; Sarmento,Daniel Oliveira de Lucena.
The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the ingestive behaviour, herbage intake and grazing efficiency of beef cattle steers grazing on Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Tanzania subjected to different rotational stocking intensities. Treatments corresponded to two post-grazing conditions (residues of 25 and 50 cm) associated with a pre-grazing condition of 95% sward canopy light interception during regrowth (LI). The grazing time increased linearly with the duration of the occupation period (475 to 630 minutes/day). On paddocks grazed down to a residue of 25 cm, the bite rate increased linearly along the occupation period, with an average of 42.5 bites/minute. On paddocks grazed down to a residue of 50 cm, the bite rate was stable and equal to 39...

n-alkanes from Paepalanthus Mart. species (Eriocaulaceae) Acta Botanica
Santos,Lourdes Campaner dos; Dokkedal,Anne L.; Sannomiya,Miriam; Soares,Maria Carla Piza; Vilegas,Wagner.
This work presents the study of nonpolar compounds from plants belonging to the genus Paepalanthus Mart. (Eriocaulaceae). Long-chain linear aliphatic hydrocarbons were identified by GC-FID and GC-MS. The results indicate that Paepalanthus subg. Platycaulon species present a very homogenous profile, with carbon chains of n-alkanes ranging from C25 to C31, most samples presenting higher frequencies of C27 and C29 homologues. Paepalanthus subg. Paepalocephalus species may be distinguished from one another by the distribution of main n-alkanes. P. macrocephalus, subsect. Aphorocaulon species, presents alkanes with odd-carbon numbers and P. denudatus and P. polyanthus, Actinocephalus species, present alkanes with quite distinctive profiles, with many shorter...
